Top seed Jannik Sinner breezes through in his Wimbledon opener

New Delhi: World No. 1 Jannik Sinner spent little energy to win his opening round match at Wimbledon, racing to a 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 victory over Luca Nardi on Tuesday.

The top seed was in top gear from the very beginning at the All England Club as he beat fellow Italian in just one hour, 48 minutes.

The 23-year-old converted five of 13 break points he got and didn’t face any break points in a controlled display on No. 1 Court in the London heat with temperatures reached as high as 34 degrees Celsius.

Sinner now faces Aleksandar Vukic, who has beaten Tseng Chun-Hsin 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5), in his opening round match.

In the women’s section, former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka overturned a break down in both sets to beat qualifier Talia Gibson 6-4, 7-6(4) in the first round.

Osaka trailed 3-1 in the first set against a 21-year-old in only her second career Grand Slam main draw. She was also behind 5-3 and 6-5 in the second set but Osaka took advantage of an early lead in the tiebreak to reach the second round safely.
