After taking a look at the , let us now take a look at the hatchback sales. India’s hatchback segment recorded total sales of 92,837 units in May 2026, registering a healthy 25.29% YoY growth over 74,100 units sold in May 2025. However, compared to April 2026, hatchback sales declined by 3.2%, down from 95,907 units. Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the segment, accounting for six of the top nine positions and commanding more than three-fourths of overall hatchback sales.
Hatchback Sales May 2026
Leading the charts was Maruti Baleno with sales of 18,396 units, up 58.34% from 11,618 units sold a year ago. Baleno captured a 19.82% share of the hatchback market. Close behind was Maruti WagonR, which sold 18,076 units, registering 29.59% growth over May 2025. Maruti Swift secured third place with 17,519 units, up 23.94% YoY. Collectively, Baleno, WagonR and Swift accounted for nearly 54,000 units, contributing almost 58% of total hatchback sales during the month.

Among the standout performers was Maruti Alto, which nearly doubled its sales. Alto recorded 9,887 units, compared to 4,970 units a year ago, reflecting a massive 98.93% growth. Even more impressive was Maruti S-Presso, which jumped from 1,806 units in May 2025 to 6,388 units in May 2026, registering 253.71% growth. Maruti’s strong performance was further supported by Celerio, which posted sales of 3,018 units, up 62.17% YoY.
Hyundai i20 Leads Non-Maruti Pack
Among non-Maruti hatchbacks, Hyundai i20 emerged as the best-selling model with 4,749 units, recording a 16.11% YoY increase. However, Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS witnessed a decline of 32.78%, with sales falling to 2,920 units from 4,344 units sold in May 2025. Sales of Tata Tiago and Tiago EV stood at 4,178 units, down 34.79% from 6,407 units sold a year earlier. The Tiago also recorded a notable 23.87% month-on-month decline.

Similarly, Toyota Glanza sales fell by 32.72% to 3,198 units, compared to 4,753 units in May 2025. Tata Altroz remained relatively stable, posting a modest 4.89% growth with sales of 2,915 units. The electric MG Comet EV recorded sales of 869 units, improving by 5.59% YoY and 44.59% compared to April 2026.
Citroen C3 posted the highest percentage growth in the segment, rising 256.36% to 392 units, although volumes remained relatively low. At the other end, Renault Kwid declined by 44.44% YoY to 300 units, while Citroen eC3 EV sold just 32 units during the month.

Hatchback MoM Performance
While year-on-year numbers remain encouraging, month-on-month performance suggests some softening in demand. Overall hatchback sales dropped by over 3,000 units compared to April 2026. Among major gainers on a monthly basis were S-Presso (+22.6%), Celerio (+31.4%), Altroz (+12.7%) and MG Comet EV (+44.6%). Most other key models, including WagonR, Swift, Alto, i20 and Tiago, recorded month-on-month declines.

OEM Wise Performance
At an OEM level, Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the hatchback segment with 73,284 units sold in May 2026, registering a strong 46% YoY growth and accounting for nearly 79% of total hatchback sales. The growth was driven by strong demand for Baleno, WagonR, Swift, Alto and S-Presso. Hyundai retained second position with 7,669 units, although sales declined 9% YoY.
Tata Motors also witnessed a decline of 22.8% to 7,093 units, largely due to lower Tiago volumes. Toyota sales fell 32.7% with Glanza, while Renault’s Kwid dropped 44.4%. Citroen emerged as the fastest-growing brand with 149% growth, albeit on a relatively small base. Overall hatchback sales increased 25.3% YoY to 92,837 units, with Maruti Suzuki contributing the bulk of the segment’s growth.
