Tomato will sell cheaper in Delhi, government made masterplan

Government gave relief from inflation, now tomatoes will be so cheap

Troubled by the rising prices of tomatoes, there has been news of relief from the government for the residents of Delhi. The central government has started selling tomatoes at concessional prices through the National Cooperative Consumer Association of India (NCCF) in Delhi.

Now people in the capital will be able to buy tomatoes at cheap prices. This step of the government has been taken with the aim of giving relief to consumers. People in Delhi can now buy tomatoes at a price of Rs 47 to Rs 60 per kg.

Purchase of tomatoes from Delhi’s largest vegetable market

NCCF started purchasing tomatoes from August 4, Delhi’s largest vegetable market, Azadpur Mandi. After this, these tomatoes are being sold to consumers with very minor benefits. According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, so far 27,307 kg tomatoes have been sold under this scheme.

Why tomato prices increased in Delhi?

In the last week of July, the supply of tomatoes obstructed due to heavy rains in North India and especially the northwestern states. This caused tomato prices to suddenly rise in Delhi and average retail price reached Rs 73 per kg. For a few days, this rate had reached 85 rupees per kg. However, from last week, the availability of tomatoes in the mandis has started increasing again, due to which the prices have started falling slightly.

How are you in other cities of the country?

Even though tomatoes have become expensive in Delhi, prices are still under control in cities like Chennai and Mumbai. The average retail price of tomatoes in Chennai is Rs 50 per kg while in Mumbai it is Rs 58 per kg. The weather has been normal in these cities, due to which the supply was not affected and there was no significant jump in prices.

All India average and current status of vegetables

The average retail price of tomatoes across the country is currently Rs 52 per kg, which is much lower at the rate of Rs 54 per kg in the previous year and Rs 136 per kg in 2023. The government says that in this monsoon season, the prices of essential vegetables like potato, onion and tomatoes remain largely stable as compared to before, which has given relief to the general public.
