As Cristiano Ronaldo’s spell with Al Nassr nears its end, speculation is mounting over where the legendary forward might land next.
At 40, an age by which most professionals have long retired, Ronaldo remains driven-especially with the 2026 World Cup still in his sights. With 99 goals in 111 games for Al Nassr and a staggering €200 million salary per year, his impact in Saudi Arabia has been massive, but silverware has eluded him beyond the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup. Now, as a mini-transfer window opens ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, Ronaldo’s next destination could be one of several intriguing options.
1. Real Madrid (Spain)
A return to Real Madrid, where Ronaldo lifted four Champions League titles, would surely thrill fans. Though Madrid’s attacking depth might limit his minutes, even a short summer reunion would carry enormous emotional weight. With Xabi Alonso now in charge, a nostalgic return isn’t impossible-if Ronaldo is willing to play a supporting role.
2. Botafogo (Brazil)
For a more romantic twist, Ronaldo could look to Brazil-specifically Botafogo. A club steeped in history, once home to legends like Garrincha and Jairzinho, Botafogo is now owned by Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor. While Brazilian clubs can’t match Al Nassr’s wages, reports suggest Textor might offer Ronaldo long-term incentives, such as a stake in Palace. Competing for Botafogo in a football-crazed nation could cement his global legacy even further.
3. Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia)
If Ronaldo wishes to remain in Saudi Arabia’s familiar territory-along with its financial perks-Al Hilal offers a logical switch. As Al Nassr’s fierce domestic rivals and Saudi Arabia’s most successful club, they have dominated the Pro League, winning six of the last nine titles. Al Hilal also represents the Kingdom at the Club World Cup, offering Ronaldo a chance to compete on a global stage without leaving the region. With Neymar sidelined and the club reportedly chasing top-tier talent like Vinícius Júnior, a move here could reignite Ronaldo’s trophy chase.
4. LAFC (USA)
If the U.S. is his next destination, LAFC stands out. The California side is already a powerhouse in MLS and would offer Ronaldo star status and a comfortable lifestyle. A potential face-off-or even team-up-with Messi in America would be historic. But LAFC must first beat Club América in a playoff to qualify for the Club World Cup.
5. Al Ain (United Arab Emirates)
Just across the border, Al Ain in the UAE could provide Ronaldo with comparable wealth and a fresh challenge. Though the UAE Pro League doesn’t command the global spotlight like Saudi Arabia’s, Ronaldo’s move there could transform its status-much as his arrival in Saudi Arabia did in 2023. With backing from UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Al Ain could deliver both financial incentives and international exposure via the Club World Cup.
6. Monterrey (Mexico)
Mexico’s Monterrey, one of Liga MX’s giants, could be an appealing short-term option. The presence of Ronaldo’s former Real Madrid teammate Sergio Ramos adds intrigue, and reuniting the duo for the Club World Cup would be a major coup. A stint in Mexico would also give Ronaldo access to one of the world’s largest football markets.
Wherever he lands, one thing is clear: Ronaldo’s story is far from over.
