Fast story of Tilkund Chaturthi
According to ancient legend, once upon a time there was a city named Bhanupuri in Karnataka state. The name of the king there was Som. He loved his subjects like their children and ruled ethically. Once there was no rainfall in his kingdom for a long time. There was famine all around.

Then King Som went to Sage Shaunaka who lived in the forest. Shaunak Muni was a great devotee of Lord Shri Ganesha. Sage Shaunaka asked the reason for King Som’s coming to the forest. King Som told him the whole story truthfully. Hearing the king’s words, Shaunak Muni said, ‘A great sin has been committed in your kingdom, due to which there has been a situation of drought there.’

When King Som asked about that great sin, Sage Shaunaka said, ‘No one in your kingdom observes Chaturthi fast which is observed on both the fortnights of every month. This fast is very dear to Lord Shri Ganesh. Only by observing this fast can there be rain in your kingdom. Shaunak Muni also told the method and importance of Chaturthi fast to King Som.
After this, Shaunak Muni also said a mantra to King Som, ‘If everyone in your kingdom fasts on Chaturthi Tithi and chants this mantra, then your problem will definitely be solved. Shaunak Muni recited the mantra ‘Ganaanam Twa Gan Hawamahe Kavini Kavinamupashravastham. Jyeshtharaja Brahmanam Brahmaspat Aa Nah Shreenvatrutibhih Sid Sadanam.
King Som came to his kingdom and observed a fast on Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Magh month along with his entire people. By doing this it started raining in his kingdom. After this, sometime in his kingdom he started fasting on Chaturthi Tithi. King Som also built many temples of Lord Shri Ganesh in his kingdom. By the grace of Lord Ganesha, no one was unhappy in his kingdom. Everyone lived with love. In this way, by observing Chaturthi fast, King Som got a place in Ganesh Lok.
