The 2026 Duleep Trophy final will be a historic occasion as the South and East zones will go head-to-head after more than five decades in the summit clash of the marquee Indian domestic event.
The summit clash of the Indian domestic season’s curtain-raiser event will take place from Sunday (September 6) at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Two key members of India’s 2026 T20 World Cup-winning teams, Ishan Kishan (East Zone) and Tilak Varma (South Zone), will lead their respective teams in the marquee clash. 15-year-old starlet Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Mohammed Shami (who both play for East Zone) will be the star attraction of the fixture.
First In 54 Years
This will only be the second time in the rich history of the competition that East and South will play the final of the tournament. The only instance of the same happening was in the 1970-71 season when the two teams met at the historic Brabourne Stadium (Cricket Club of India) in Mumbai (then Bombay). South Zone won that fixture by 10 wickets.
Overall, this will mark the 24th time South Zone plays in the final, which is the third-most among all teams in history. They have now featured in the summit clash of each of the last six editions in which the competition has been held in a zonal format. They have won the tournament 13 times and are looking for a 14th title.
On the other hand, East Zone will play in the final after a gap of 13 years. Their last appearance was in the 2012-13 season, when they won the tournament after defending the title. They will play the final only for the eighth time and look to win the trophy for the third time.
Road To Final
By virtue of playing the final last year, South got a bye in the quarter-final and faced North Zone in the semi-final. They won the fixture by seven wickets, with skipper Tilak (116* and 51*) being the star of the show.
On the other hand, East Zone defeated North East Zone in the quarter-finals by a whopping margin of an innings and 210 runs. In the semi-finals, they defeated defending champions Central Zone by four wickets.
