For FY 2025-26, the government has increased the date of filing income tax from 31 July to 15 September 2025, due to which people are now filing their ITR. But, the refund they are getting from the department is getting less. Let’s understand about it with details.
Regarding this problem, CA Aditi Bhardwaj on the social media platform X told that this is happening due to some technical glitter in the software filing ITR. He said that according to Section 288B of the Income Tax Act, 1961, the amount of refund should be counted in the nearest quality of ten rupees. However, it has been observed that for the ITR refund of FY 2025-26, the final refund has not been rounded, due to which the refund of the people is coming down. He told that 35,807 rupees should be rounded for Rs 35,810 which is not happening.
As per section 288B of the Income-tax Act, 1961, the Amount of Refund Should be founded off to the Nearest Multiple of Ten Rupees.
However, it is observed that for itr refunds of ay 2025-26, the final refund is not founded off.
For example, ₹ 35,807 is not founded to ₹ 35,810. pic.twitter.com/ca8Uphscda

He has pointed to a disturbance in the computer system that processes ITR. The problem is that the tax refund amount is not being rounded off, resulting in missing small amount.
If this happens, what will happen next?
In the ET report, Tax2win co-founder Abhishek Soni says that if it was a fault, it would mean that Section 288B of the Income Tax Act, 1961 has been violated, as the refund should be rounded up to Rs 10. Sony further said that although the difference per taxpayer is less, but overall it can go into crores, which can also increase complaints, additional administrative burden and litigation. Since this policy seems to be a systematic disturbance instead of change, it is expected to make it clear and correct by the Income Tax Department soon.
