This Suzuki Hatchback Just Crossed 10 Million Global Sales; And No, It’s Not the ‘Lord’ Alto

Suzuki’s popular hatchback, the Wagon R, has achieved a major global sales milestone, crossing the 10 million-unit mark. Introduced in Japan in September 1993, the Wagon R reached this figure in 31 years and 9 months.

Often referred to as a ‘tall boy’ hatchback, the Wagon R has been sold across 75 countries. Apart from Japan and India, it was also available in select European markets. India has played a key role in the Wagon R’s global success, serving as a major production hub across multiple generations. Production has also taken place in Hungary and Indonesia.

Though based on the same design philosophy, the Wagon R has seen different versions across markets. Japan’s version differs from the one sold in India, which is exclusive to the country and currently in its fourth generation.
In India, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is offered with two petrol engine options: a 1.0-litre three-cylinder and a 1.2-litre four-cylinder unit. Both engines are paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. Additionally, the 1.0-litre variant is available with a factory-fitted CNG kit.

Prices for the Wagon R in India currently start at Rs 5.78 lakh (ex-showroom). The model continues to be a strong performer in the domestic market, regularly ranking among the best-selling cars in the country.
