Gold: difference in carat
When you go to a gold shop and hear ‘this is 22 karat’ or ‘this is 18 karat’ do you really know what that means? Let us understand it in simple language. Carat is a way of telling the purity of gold. 24 carat means 100% pure gold. As the carat decreases, other metals (like copper, silver, zinc etc.) are added to it so that the gold becomes stronger and can be molded into jewellery.
24 karat gold
24 carat gold is completely pure, but very soft. For this reason it is mostly used for bullion, coins or investments, not for jewelry.
22 carat gold
22 carat gold is approximately 91.6% pure. A small amount of silver or copper is added to it, which makes it a little stronger, but it is still fragile. Its bright yellow luster makes it very attractive and expensive. If silver is mixed in it, it is more yellow and expensive, whereas with copper its color is slightly reddish.
18 carat gold
18 carat gold contains 75% pure gold. It is very popular for jewellery, especially when studded with diamonds or gemstones. Due to its strength it is durable and lasts for a long time. This is a great option for everyday wear.
14 carat gold
14 carat gold means it contains 58.3% pure gold and the rest other metals. It is stronger than 18 carat gold. For those whose budget is a little less, this can be a smart choice.
9 carat gold
9 carat gold contains only 37.5% pure gold. Most of it consists of other metals such as copper or silver. Because of this it is cheaper but its shine can fade quickly. If it contains copper, it gives a light bronze color, and if it contains silver or nickel, it appears white.
Identify real gold by hallmark
Whenever you buy gold, definitely check its hallmark. 22 karat gold is often marked ‘916’ (meaning 91.6% purity). Whereas “750” is written on 18 carat, and “375” is written on 9 carat.
Which option would be correct?
If you want a piece of jewelry that is expensive, beautiful and traditional, then 22 carat would be perfect. Whereas if you want a jewelery which is strong and suitable for daily wear, then 18 or 14 carat will be suitable. And if your budget is limited and you need a jewel to wear daily, then 9 carat can be a cheaper option for you but its shine and quality will be limited.
