There will be no shortage of petrol and diesel in the country due to Iraq-Israel war, government increased imports from Russia

Amidst the increasing tension in the Middle East, Russia again seems to be becoming the biggest oil supplier to India. According to the report, after a slight decline in February, the supply of Russian crude oil is increasing rapidly.

Why did purchases from Russia decrease in February?

In February, India had reduced oil imports from Russia. It declined by about 32% to about 1 million barrels per day, which is half the peak of June 2025. During this period, Iraq had become India’s largest supplier.

Boom in imports from the Middle East

Oil imports from the Middle East increased amid shortage from Russia. Imports from Iraq reached 11.8 lakh barrels per day, while supply from Saudi Arabia also stood at around 10 lakh barrels per day. Overall, the Middle East’s share in India’s oil imports reached about 59%.

Russia’s comeback quick

However, now the situation is changing. According to experts, the supply from Russia has again increased to about 18 lakh barrels per day and in March it can go up to 2022 lakh barrels per day. Kpler analyst says that Russia is still an important part of India’s oil strategy.

Tension affecting supply

The obstruction in the Strait of Hormuz and tensions related to Iran have affected the supply chain, due to which India had to change its sources.

Efforts to increase suppliers

The government is now bringing more diversification in oil imports. Imports from Brazil have increased, making it India’s fourth largest supplier. India’s oil procurement strategy is constantly changing. On one hand, it is managing the risks of the Middle East, while on the other hand, it is trying to maintain a balanced supply from many countries including Russia.
