Red lights seen in Ladakh
This is the night of 19 and 20 January 2026. The bright red light in the sky near Hanle village of Ladakh had attracted everyone’s attention. It was similar to the aurora lights of the Nordic areas. But here instead of green the sky was red. It is a coincidence that red color is the color of danger and the ‘bloody red’ sky seen in Ladakh also indicates something ‘dangerous’.
Actually, these lights were born due to a dangerous solar storm emanating from the sun. On January 18, an X-class solar flare erupted on the Sun. Solar flare is an explosion in the sun, which releases huge amounts of energy, light and high speed particles. The X-Class is the most powerful banger ever.
When this X-class solar flare erupted on January 18, the Sun threw a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) towards the Earth. It is a very large cloud of gas and magnetic energy from the Sun. This cloud came towards the earth at a very high speed. After coming to Earth it collided with its magnetic field. Due to this collision, a Geomagnetic Storm of G4 level was formed, which is a very dangerous storm.
Scientists say that the X-class solar flare indicates that the Sun is becoming more active than ever before. This had never been seen before.
The biggest danger from the storm arising from this explosion is not that it will increase the temperature on the earth or that the heat that absorbs everything will cause annihilation on the earth. What scientists are more worried about is the danger related to electromagnetism. It is the electromagnetism of the Earth, which prevents dangerous particles coming from the Sun from reaching the Earth and throws them away. It is a ‘natural shield’ protecting the Earth from solar wind and charged particles coming from the Sun.
Scientists say that as the Sun becomes more active, the risk of catastrophic solar storms like the Carrington Event will increase. Carrington event is a very dangerous solar storm. If such a storm were to hit today’s world, it could generate such a strong current in the power grid that power transformers would melt. Not only this, the satellite’s electronic systems will also blow up.
Now the question is how dangerous can its effect be?
According to India Today’s report, if such solar storms occur, the internet may be shut down across the world for months or years. Electricity grids can fail completely. There may be power outages all over the world. Satellites may fail and GPS may not work for weeks. In a country like India, where digital systems are growing rapidly, such a solar storm can bring the banking system to a standstill. Mobile and internet services can be shut down, due to which the communication system can be completely ruined.
Overall, the aurora lights seen in Hanle may have been beautiful to look at, but according to scientists, they could also be a warning of great danger to come.
