According to the report of South China Morning Post, 24-year-old Wang Jiao from Shanxi province was suffering from uremia (severe kidney disease). Doctors said that without a transplant she would not be able to live more than a year. When no donor was found in the family, they took a unique step, advertising the marriage in an online group.
Wang had written, “After marriage, I will take full care of you… I just want a chance to live.” A few days later, 27-year-old Yu Jianping, who was fighting cancer, responded to his ad. Yu’s blood group matched Wang’s. Both of them got married secretly in July 2013. Under this agreement, it was decided that after Yu’s death, one of his kidneys would be given to Wang, while Wang would take care of him until his death.
The story that started with compromise turned into love.

The power of love changed fate
There was a shortage of money for bone marrow transplant in the UK. Then Wang started selling flowers on the roadside. At her small stall, she kept flowers along with stories of “love and hope” which touched people’s hearts. Gradually they raised about 500,000 yuan (about 70,000 US dollars), which made Yu’s treatment possible. By June 2014, Yu’s health stabilized, and miraculously Wang’s condition also improved. Now he no longer needs regular dialysis.
Today both are healthy and happy
In February 2015 the couple held a wedding banquet to celebrate their “new life” and “true love”. The film “Viva la Vida”, based on her inspirational story, premiered in China in 2024, grossing 276 million yuan (about US$38 million).
Today the couple runs a flower shop in Xi’an (Shanxi province). Both are completely healthy and living a quiet, contented life – the only memory of that “deal” is now the story of their love.
