The presence of gas was found at a depth of 2250 meters.
India’s energy security and self -sufficiency have been a major success. A large reserves of natural gas have been found in the Andaman and a major achievement in the country’s maritime search. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced this discovery, calling it a “ocean of energy opportunities”. He said, “This natural gas discovery will be an important achievement in our journey of Amrit period.”
The gas reserves are found in the Shri Vijayapuram-2 well, which is located in a depth of 295 meters of water, about 17 km from the Andaman coast and was drilled up to 2,650 meters depth. Puri said, “The preliminary test conducted at a depth of 2212 to 2250 meters was found, in which flaminging (flames) were also seen in between. Gas samples were brought to Kakinada from the ship, where the investigation revealed that it revealed that it contained 87% methane.”
The import of the country may be reduced
Puri said that the size of the gas reserves and its commercial utility will be examined in the coming months, but this discovery proves that the Andaman basin is full of natural gas, just as the discovery was done in the same geological region of Myanmar and Indonesia. This major discovery will reduce India’s natural gas imports, which is increasing year by year. In the financial year 202324, about 44% of India’s consumption of natural gas was completed by imports, which was mainly brought as liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Wells are being dug in the sea
This discovery has been made after the announcement of the National Deep Water Exploration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day. PM Modi had said, “We are now moving towards sea churning. Under this we will find oil and gas reserves in the mission mode. India is now going to start the National Deep Water Exploration Mission.” Under the Samudra Manthan Mission, deep wells will be dug in areas adjoining the country so that new reserves can be found and hydrocarbon resources can be fully used.
