‘The Social Network Part II’ is in works, Aaron Sorkin set to both write and direct

New Delhi: Fans of Facebook and of veteran screenwriter Aaron Sorkin are in for a treat. After the writer’s critically and commercially acclaimed film The Social Network, he is now slated to return to continue the story of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg from where he left it off the last time.

The Social Network, directed by David Fincher was a landmark film of its time. A biography of one of the world’s most famous and influential person, the film delved into the personal and professional world of Zuckerberg to explore both his life, career and the time in which he and his company rose to the top.

The Social Network 2 incoming

Aaron Sorkin broke many a new ground when he wrote ‘The Social Network’. The film then was directed by David Fincher, but Sorkin was present on set for nearly the whole time, getting to direct one small scene as well. This time round for the second part, Sorkin is all geared to wear both the director’s and the screenwriter’s hat.

According to early reports, while the new film would be titled as the part two, it is not a straight sequel but rather a follow-up to the original movie. The next film is to explore the origins of what would become the world’s biggest social media platform, now called Meta. The new film project is in development with Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin and Stuart Besser producing.

Sorkin’s original screenplay for the new film reportedly explores the story behind the Wall Street Journal‘s The Facebook Files by Jeff Horowitz. These refer to a spate of controversial and revealing articles published in 2021 that exposed the inner workings of Meta, and many purported ills caused by the company’s working method around the world.

The first part, The Social Network, was released in 2010 by Sony Pictures. A commercial and critical wonder, it was based on Ben Mezrich book The Accidental Millionaires. The film, directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin, earned $226 million at the global box office and was nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture. The film eventually won three Oscars, including Sorkin winning one for Best Adapted Screenplay.

When the first Social Network came out, Sorkin directed one small scene in the film, the remaining directorial duties were carried on by David Fincher. Sorkin though was present on set for nearly the whole duration of the film. Sorkin since then has ventured into direction as well, Molly’s Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Being the Ricardos, being his recent directorial bids.
