Nepal Parliament House
Amid recent violence in the capital of Nepal, protesters set the Parliament House of the country on fire. This is the same Parliament House that was constructed in Nepal especially for legislative works. Now that this building is in the grip of fire, this question has started to arise, how much was spent on it?
Parliament House was formed in partnership of China-Nepal
The new Federal Parliament House of Nepal was being built within the Singh Durbar complex. The construction work started in the year 2019. For this, China’s second Harbor Engineering Company and Nepal’s Tundi Construction were jointly contracted. This building is the first full legislative structure of Nepal, as until before that the International Convention Center at Baneshwar was being used as Parliament.
Building was built for 5.802 billion Nepali rupees
According to government documents, the initial cost of this building was fixed at around 5 billion Nepali rupees. But as the work progressed, the prices of construction materials increased, the deadline was repeatedly increased, and the project continued to be delayed. Due to all these reasons, there was an additional increase of 560 million (56 crore) Nepali rupees. As a result, the total estimated cost of Parliament House has increased to 5.802 billion Nepali rupees (US $ 43.5 million).
Construction was not completed yet
Interestingly, this Parliament House was not fully prepared till now. Construction work was going on and work was being done to complete it soon. But as soon as Prime Minister K.K. P. Sharma Oli resigned, violence erupted in the capital a few minutes later. The protesters set arson on the outskirts of the Parliament House, causing damage to the main structure of the building. However, the building is not completely destroyed.
Violence caused by social media ban
The ban by the Nepal government on social media across the country became a major reason for this protest. This ban was implemented on Monday, which caused heavy resentment in the public. Alam was that the protesters took to the streets and started violent demonstrations. The result of this anger came out as targeting Parliament House and Oli’s house. Later, the government had to remove this ban late at night, but by then the situation had deteriorated considerably.
