Kabul: Once again a public hanging took place in Afghanistan. The man convicted of killing a family of 13 in Khost in eastern Afghanistan has been given the death penalty. According to reports, this punishment was imposed on a 13 year old boy from the family. A video of the hanging has also surfaced. About 80,000 people had gathered to see this punishment. Several news agencies, including the Associated Press, reported that the punishment was carried out in a stadium in Khost.
A man named Mangal was given death sentence. The Supreme Court of Afghanistan found him guilty and the Taliban’s supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada approved the death sentence. This public hanging was condemned internationally. The United Nations described it as inhumane, cruel and against international law. The Supreme Court of Afghanistan said that this is the 11th extrajudicial killing carried out by the Taliban after returning to power in 2021. The Afghan Supreme Court ruled that the divine command of ‘Qisas’ (revenge) was imposed on the murderer.
Thousands of people, including relatives of the victims, gathered at Khost’s sports stadium to watch the execution. The court found Mangal guilty of murdering Abdul Rahman, a resident of Khost, and other members of his family in Ali Shir and Teresio districts 10 months ago. People were raising religious slogans at the time of hanging. Afghanistan’s Amu News, quoting local sources, reported that a 13-year-old boy was sentenced to death by hanging when relatives made it clear that they did not want to forgive the culprit. The Taliban have reimposed their strict interpretation of Sharia law, including public executions, flogging and other corporal punishment.
