The Mahindra Scorpio case study: From rural roads to urban highways

The Scorpio was launched in 2002 at a time when India had limited options for affordable, locally developed SUVs. Mahindra identified an opportunity to combine rugged performance with urban appeal, positioning Scorpio as an aspirational SUV beyond its traditional utility vehicle portfolio.

Over the years, Scorpio evolved through product upgrades, changing its engines, chassis, features and technology while retaining its core identity of being rugged, powerful and desirable. Its messaging also moved from masculinity and toughness to a more lifestyle-led proposition, while Scorpio-N expanded its appeal among urban and premium SUV buyers.

The case study looks at how consistent brand identity, product evolution and a dual-brand strategy helped Scorpio build a loyal customer base and span multiple markets and demographics. By 2024, the Scorpio brand had sold over nine lakh units cumulatively, while Scorpio-N crossed one lakh bookings within 30 minutes of its 2022 launch.
