New Delhi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Suryakumar Yadav, known for his aggressive batting style, has captured the attention of cricket fans worldwide with his ability to play shots from every angle.
His fearless approach and impressive performances under pressure have established him as one of India’s leading T20 players.
Born on September 14, 1990, in Ghazipur, Suryakumar grew up dreaming of playing for India while honing his skills in the streets of his hometown. At the age of ten, his family relocated to Mumbai for better training opportunities, where he joined the Vengsarkar Academy to refine his cricketing talent.
His father, Ashok Kumar Yadav, worked as an electrical engineer at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. The family’s move to Mumbai was pivotal, allowing them to support Suryakumar’s educational and cricketing endeavors fully.
Suryakumar consistently excelled in domestic cricket, and after nearly a decade of hard work, he made his international debut on March 14, 2021, against England in T20 cricket. Although he didn’t bat in his first innings, he made an immediate impact in his next match, scoring 57 runs off 31 balls, helping secure a victory for his team. In his third T20 match, he contributed significantly with a quick 32 runs, aiding India in achieving a formidable score of 224/2 and winning the series by 36 runs.
Before his international debut, Suryakumar had already made his mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL), debuting in 2012 with the Mumbai Indians. He played only one match that season before joining the Kolkata Knight Riders for four seasons, where he struggled to leave a lasting impression. However, the year 2018 marked a turning point in his IPL career when he returned to the Mumbai Indians, scoring 512 runs with four half-centuries in 14 matches.
In the following seasons, he continued to shine, amassing 424 and 480 runs, respectively. In IPL 2023, he had an outstanding season, scoring 605 runs at an average of 43.21 and captaining the team for the first time. Over his IPL career, he has played 179 matches, scoring 4,581 runs at an average of 33.68, contributing to the team’s title wins in 2019 and 2020.
In November 2023, Suryakumar took over as captain of the Indian T20 team. By July 2024, following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20 international cricket, he was appointed the full-time captain. Under his leadership, he played 52 T20 international matches, scoring 1,232 runs, including one century and eight half-centuries, leading India to 42 victories against just eight losses.
Suryakumar’s captaincy has been remarkable, with India winning eight out of nine series and clinching the T20 World Cup title in 2026. His exceptional catch against South Africa in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup turned the tide in India’s favor, securing a seven-run victory. He also led India to triumph in the 2025 Asia Cup.
Having played 113 T20 matches, Suryakumar has scored 3,272 runs, including four centuries and 25 half-centuries. Additionally, he has played 37 One Day Internationals, scoring 773 runs, and has participated in one Test match.
