New Delhi: A total of 80 players were sold in the inaugural auction of The Hundred men’s competition on Thursday in London. Sussex all-rounder James Coles fetched the highest price on the auction day at 390,000 ((approx. 4.8 crore), becoming the most expensive signing in the tournament’s history by London Spirit.
However, the highlight of the auction did not become the costliest signing Coles but Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed was the one who dominated the headlines. Abrar was picked up for 190,000 by Sunrisers Leeds, a team owned by the same group as the IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad. The franchise faced a lot of fire for signing a Pakistani player who was in news for mocking India and army personnel.
Meanwhile, the other Pakistani player to be picked was Usman Tariq, who was bought by Birmingham Phoenix for £140,000. Former English skipper Joe Root was the first player to go under the hammer, secured by Welsh Fire for 240,000, while Jason Roy was the final pick of the auction at 31,000 by MI London.
