The impact of the ongoing tension in the Gulf region and the war related to Iran is no longer limited to just oil and gas, but its impact has started reaching the everyday things of the common people. Now there is news that the prices of condoms may also increase in India in the coming time. According to the report of The Indian Express, the root of this entire situation is the disruption in the petrochemical supply chain.
According to a report by ‘The Indian Express’, India’s condom industry is worth Rs 8,000 crore. Disruptions in the petrochemical supply chain have led to a shortage of essential raw materials, which has impacted the country’s condom manufacturing sector, which produces more than 400 crore units. If the shortage of raw materials continues, the price of condoms may increase in the future.
Ammonia price will be affected
To make condoms, some special raw materials are required, like silicone oil and ammonia. Silicone oil is used as a lubricant, while ammonia helps keep the latex safe and stable. Due to war and supply interruption, the availability of silicone oil has reduced, due to which companies are facing increased uncertainty regarding production. Along with this, there is a possibility of a huge rise in the prices of ammonia. Its price may increase by 40 to 50 percent. Apart from this, materials like PVC and aluminum foil used in packaging are also becoming expensive. Due to all these reasons the cost of making condoms is continuously increasing.
Problems increasing due to shortage of raw materials
In India, big companies of this sector like HLL Lifecare, Mankind Pharma and Cupid are currently facing this crisis. Officials of the companies say that due to shortage of raw materials and inflation, production and timely delivery is becoming difficult. Also, problems in logistics have made the situation more serious. The situation may worsen further as the government may reduce the allocation of petrochemical resources while giving priority to essential sectors. In such a situation, the supply to the condom industry may further decrease, due to which the increase in prices is considered almost certain.
This is not just a business problem, but can also become a social concern. In India, use of condoms is considered very important for family planning and population control. If prices increase, its use may reduce, which may also impact the society. The impact of Iran War is now slowly reaching the things of common life. After LPG, now the rising prices of essential products like condoms show how the global crisis can affect the pocket and life of every person.
