The Global Reach of The Masters: Players from 23 Countries Compete

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) – The Masters, a prestigious golf tournament, features players from 23 different countries this year, highlighting its global appeal.

The event, taking place at Augusta National, marks the 40th anniversary of the introduction of the Official World Golf Ranking.

Bernhard Langer, a two-time Masters champion, reflected on the significance of the ranking system, which was officially introduced at the 1986 Masters. This system has since played a vital role in expanding opportunities for international golfers in major championships.

The Origin of the World Golf Ranking

The Official World Golf Ranking traces its origins to a list created in 1968 by IMG founder Mark McCormack. It garnered attention from the R&A while reviewing criteria for the British Open, leading to its formal introduction at the Masters in 1986.

At that time, the ranking featured Langer at No. 1, followed by Seve Ballesteros and Sandy Lyle. The highest-ranked American was Tom Watson at No. 4, while Jack Nicklaus, at age 46, was ranked No. 33. Notably, Nicklaus went on to win his sixth Masters during that tournament.

Impact on International Golf

Langer emphasized that the introduction of the ranking system was crucial in allowing international golfers to participate in major tournaments. He noted, “It was time to have something like that because international golfers were excluded from tournaments like the Masters, the U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship.”

Before the ranking, foreign players faced significant barriers to entry in prestigious events. The change allowed for greater representation, as evidenced by the increasing number of international champions in tournaments like the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship.

The Evolution of the Rankings

The Sony Rankings evolved into the Official World Golf Ranking in 1997 when the major tours and the four major championships formed a governing board. Currently, the ranking encompasses 25 tours worldwide, with LIV Golf being the most recent addition.

Debates continue regarding the awarding of points to LIV Golf players, reflecting ongoing discussions about the weight of different tours in the rankings. Nonetheless, the OWGR has played a significant role in expanding the international scope of professional golf.

Current Landscape of the Masters

The Masters now boasts a field of 91 players from 23 countries, a significant increase from the 88-man field representing 11 countries when the ranking system began. This diversity underscores the tournament’s growth and the increasing globalization of the sport.

As the current world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, leads the rankings, the top 10 includes an equal number of Americans and Europeans, all of whom compete on the PGA Tour, further demonstrating the interconnectedness of global golf.
