Jos Buttler of the England cricket team has described 14-year-old young Indian cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi as the best young player ever. Butler was surprised to see Vaibhav’s innings of 175 runs in the Under-19 World Cup final.
London: England cricket team’s star player Jos Buttler has praised young player Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who plays for India’s Under-19 team and Rajasthan Royals in IPL. Butler said that Vaibhav, just 14 years old, is the best young player he has seen so far. While talking in a podcast named ‘For the Love of Cricket’, he said that the way Vaibhav played against England in the Under-19 World Cup final was really surprising.
In the Under-19 World Cup final match held in Harare on 6 February, 14-year-old Vaibhav from Bihar had scored 175 runs in just 80 balls against England. His stormy innings included 15 fours and 15 sixes. Butler said, “I was watching that match on TV. Every single shot of his was unbelievable. It is unimaginable that someone can play like this at the age of 14. If he is like this now, what will happen at the age of 16 or 20? Sachin Tendulkar made his debut at the age of 16. There was not much social media then. But Vaibhav has already caught everyone’s attention.”
Vaibhav Suryavanshi shines in IPL too
Not only in the Under-19 World Cup, Vaibhav has also proved his ability in the IPL. Making his debut for Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 IPL, Vaibhav made a record by scoring a century in just 35 balls against Gujarat Titans. This was the fastest century by an Indian player in IPL history. Butler also said that he was surprised to see the way Vaibhav faced senior spinners like Ashwin and Jadeja like an experienced player.
When India won the Under-19 World Cup for the sixth time, Vaibhav received the ‘Player of the Series’ award. He had scored a total of 439 runs in seven innings. The 175 runs scored in the final is the highest individual score in the history of World Cup finals.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s Under-19 World Cup journey ends
According to BCCI rules, a player who has played the Under-19 World Cup once cannot participate in it again. This rule has been made so that new young players get a chance and the young players do not just stay at the Under-19 level but reach the senior level. BCCI had made this rule in 2016 on the advice of Rahul Dravid.
