Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to help complete principal photography on The Batman Part II while director Matt Reeves deals with an ongoing family matter. The Oscar-winning filmmaker has offered to assist with the final weeks of filming, with DC Studios backing the arrangement. Reeves has clarified that he is not leaving the highly anticipated sequel and remains closely involved in the production. The move comes after filming was temporarily paused earlier this month, raising questions about the film’s progress. Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Gotham’s Dark Knight, with the sequel currently scheduled to arrive in February 2028.
Steven Soderbergh to complete The Batman Part II
Soderbergh reached out to Reeves after hearing the director was dealing with a family situation and offered to lend a hand, a statement Variety reported. Soderbergh will be joining Reeves and the cast and crew for the last few weeks of principal photography, with the full support of DC Studios.
The deal is meant to ensure the remaining footage meshes well with what’s already been shot and stays true to Reeves’ creative vision. Soderbergh has lauded the director’s work on the 2022 picture The Batman, praising it as deliberate, unique and consistent. Soderbergh stated his goal was to engage with Reeves and his crew to produce footage that would blend seamlessly with the current picture, so that Reeves can finish the film the way he wanted.
Matt Reeves is not leaving the film
in a post on X (formerly Twitter), addressed the uncertainty around his future on the sequel and made it clear that he is not leaving the project for good. “Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II,” the director stated, thanking Soderbergh for stepping in at a difficult time. Reeves also thanked his followers for their concern and well wishes.
“I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes,” he wrote.
He clarified this after Warner Bros. and DC Studios said earlier this month that production was momentarily delayed due to a family problem he had to attend to. The company had announced its support of Reeves and its aim to get back to the production path soon.
The new deal permits the filming to go ahead as Reeves continues to serve as producer on the project and work closely with Soderbergh. No further details about the family matter have been disclosed.

Robert Pattinson will return as Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright complete the ensemble cast.
