New Delhi: India’s first Tesla Centre will open to the public on 26 November at Orchid Business Park in Gurugram, Haryana. This is Tesla’s first full centre in the country. Before this, the company had opened two experience centres, one in Mumbai and another in Aerocity, New Delhi, over the past four months.
India became Tesla’s 50th market when the company introduced two versions of the Model Y here. The starting price is Rs 59.89 lakh. Both versions are fully imported from Tesla’s plant in Shanghai. According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), Tesla sold 104 units in India in September and October. These numbers come from the government’s Vahan registration database.
Tesla Model Y is among the most expensive in the world in India
The longer-range Model Y, which is Tesla’s best-selling model globally, costs Rs 67.89 lakh in India. Because the country has a 70% import duty, the Model Y here is among the most expensive in the world. Compared to its US price, the Indian Model Y costs almost 30% more.
Tesla entered the Indian market at a time when the company was facing challenges globally. Its sales have slowed down in major countries, and investors have raised concerns. In the September quarter, Tesla sold 497,100 vehicles worldwide, only a 7% increase compared to 462,900 units in the same quarter last year. In China, which is one of Tesla’s biggest and most competitive markets, sales in October 2025 dropped to a three-year low of 26,006 units. This decline is mainly due to more competition and weaker demand.
In India, Tesla is now trying to grow its sales and expand its retail footprint under its new country head, Sharad Agarwal. He joined Tesla in November. Before this, he worked as chief business officer at Classic Legends, and from 2016 to 2024, he served as the head of Lamborghini India. Earlier, he had also worked with Audi India as head of sales.
In the Indian luxury EV market, German brands Mercedes-Benz and BMW are far ahead of everyone else. Together, they control almost 80% of the segment. Around 460–480 luxury EVs were sold in India in October. Tesla will compete with models like the BMW iX1, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Volvo EC40, Kia EV6, and the BYD Sealion 7.
