Tesla is set to begin its journey in the Indian market with the first showroom in Mumbai, followed by another one in Delhi. Although the company has confirmed its plans to establish a presence in India, it has remained tight-lipped about which models will be launched initially in the country.
However, looking at the recent trends and the past, Model Y and Model 3 will be the first models of the American EV manufacturer to go on sale in the country.
The launch of the Tesla Model Y seems like a viable option for the brand, considering the growing popularity of SUVs in India. The recently updated model has been spotted testing multiple times in the country and will be showcased at the upcoming Mumbai dealership of the brand. Meanwhile, the Model 3 is another likely option as it was the first model that the brand had taken bookings for when it initially planned to enter India in 2016.
For the Model Y, it is anticipated that there will be options available for either a single-motor RWD or a dual-motor AWD variant featuring a 75 kWh battery pack. In the highest-spec version, it might produce 379 hp and provide a range of 526 km, whereas the RWD configuration could achieve a range of 574 km. However, these details will be confirmed following official announcements. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model 3 shares its powertrain with the Model Y and offers 629 km of range in the Long Range version.
Tesla Model Y Expected Price India
Likely to be sold as a completely built-up unit (CBU), five Model Y units from the Shanghai factory have reportedly arrived in Mumbai, each priced at nearly Rs 27.7 lakh ($31,988). However, because of a substantial 70 percent import duty on electric vehicles priced below $40,000, the overall cost is likely to surpass Rs 48 lakh (including Rs 21 lakh in import taxes), even before adding GST and insurance.
Tesla Model 3 Expected Price India
The Model 3 starts at a price of $29,990 (Rs 25.99 lakh) in the United States, and with the updated EV policy reducing the import duty by 15 per cent, its ex-showroom cost in India could be approximately Rs 29.79 lakh. However, when including state taxes and registration fees, the on-road price might surpass Rs 40 lakh, putting it in direct competition with vehicles such as the BYD Seal.
