Telangana municipal elections: Counting underway, Congress emerges as frontrunner

Hyderabad: The ruling Congress party began as a dominant force in Telangana Municipal elections, gaining control of 135 municipalities, while BRS lagged behind with 66 and BJP trailed significantly with only 17 wards. Other parties managed to secure 10 municipalities.

The elections were held on February 11 for 116 municipalities and seven corporations. The counting began with postal ballots in various districts. Congress swept Husnabad municipality, winning wards 4, 5, 6, 7. In Nagarkurnool, Congress candidate Pothula Chandrakala won ward 18, Nagarkurnool with over 210 votes. In ward 9, Cong candidate Sunkeri Alivelu won ward 9 with 315 votes. In ward 21, Padiga Shankar secured victory with 48 votes.

In Makthal, Congress party candidate Anitha wins ward 8 while Saritha Govind Rao won in ward 13. In Yellampet Municipality of Medchal district, BRS candidates won four wards while Congress candidates secured wins in three.

About 136 counting centres have been set up to make it a smooth, safe process. Over 10,000 police teams and quick response teams have been stationed around counting centres to maintain law and order.

Who are allowed at counting centres?

Counting supervisors, assistants, candidates and their election, counting agents are allowed into the counting hall. Voter turnout for the election stood at 73 percent, as per State Election Commission data.
