Telangana: Chairman elections today in 11 deferred municipalities

Hyderabad: Indirect elections for municipal chairperson and vice-chairperson posts were chaotic in several places, leading to clashes between supporters of the ruling Congress and opposition parties BRS and BJP on Monday.

However, in several places, the Congress and BRS had to join hands to secure chairperson and vice-chairperson posts while Congress and BJP also came to an understanding through a ‘sharing system’ to capture posts.

Out of 112 urban local bodies, Congress grabbed 84 chairperson, mayor posts for municipalities and municipal corporations while BRS managed to secure 18 posts and BJP was left with just 2 posts. CPI and AIFB grabbed one seat each. Independents won chairmanship positions in four seats – Bhainsa, Adilabad, Jammikunta, Mahabubabad.

Disputes in 11 urban civic bodies, election today:

However, authorities postponed indirect elections in 11 municipalities due to lack of quorum, allegations of political interference and clashes. These municipalities include Thorrur, Yellandu, Ibrahimpatnam, Kagaznagar, Sultanabad, Kyatanpalli, Khanapur, Zaheerabad, Dornakal, Indresham, Jangaon.

The elections to these municipalities will be held today. The Congress appointed eleven observers to eight out of the 11 municipalities.

In Ibrahimpatnam, Rangareddy district, elections were postponed due to lack of quorum. Congress and BRS candidates got 14 votes each in Jangaon municipality, leading to a deadlock.
