New Delhi: Tata Motors has achieved a big milestone with its compact SUV, the Punch. The company confirmed that it has crossed 6 lakh units in production in under four years since its launch in October 2021. That makes it the fastest SUV in India to hit the 6 lakh milestone. The company is celebrating this feat with a new campaign called “India Ki SUV.”
The Punch created a whole new segment in the Indian market when it launched. It was designed to offer SUV-like stance and features to first-time buyers without making them stretch their budget. And by the looks of it, the plan has clearly worked.
Tata Punch becomes highest-selling car of 2024
The car made headlines in 2024 by becoming the highest-selling car in India, beating out long-time leaders in the hatchback and compact sedan segments. Its appeal spans beyond cities. Buyers from Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns make up a significant portion of its owners, showing that the Punch isn’t just a metro success story.
Some interesting stats about the Punch’s buyer base:
- 70% of ICE Punch buyers are first-time car owners.
- 25% of Punch EV owners are women, many citing ease of driving and road presence.
- Sales split: 24% from Tier 1 cities, 42% from Tier 2, and 34% from Tier 3 towns.
The Punch is currently available in petrol, CNG, and EV options. Both the ICE and EV versions hold a 5-star safety rating, certified by Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP. That’s a big win for a car that costs under ₹10 lakh in most variants.
Its compact footprint, high ground clearance, and upright design have helped it attract young professionals, families, and even older buyers looking for a second or third car. In fact, the Punch now contributes to 36% of Tata Motors’ overall passenger vehicle sales and holds a strong 38% share in the sub-compact SUV segment for FY25.
