Tata Motors launches Aeris at ₹5.29 lakh, targets 7.5 lakh-plus annual vehicle sales, EVs remain in focus

has launched the Aeris compact sedan in India at an introductory ex-showroom price starting at ₹5.29 lakh, as the automaker expects to conclude one year with over 750,000 total vehicle sales.

Tata’s Sedan Expedition

The new Aeris replaces the Tigor nameplate, featuring a significantly revised exterior and an updated cabin. While the overall sedan segment’s share of the total industry volume has been declining, the compact sedan category has bucked the trend.

“We saw compact sedan in the last one or two years has been growing at 20%,” said Shailesh Chandra, MD & CEO, Tata Motors. “There is a sizable number of nearly 3.5 lakh compact sedans which are being sold. So that gave us confidence that we should be offering our product.”

The company’s research indicated that personal buyers and fleet operators have distinct requirements. The Aeris is designed exclusively for the personal segment, offering contemporary design, new technologies and enhanced comfort, while Tata Motors will maintain a separate product optimised for fleet use.

Demand for compact sedans is particularly strong in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, where the vehicle serves as an aspirational upgrade for first-time hatchback owners. In contrast, the average purchasing power for cars in mega-cities like Mumbai and Delhi stands at ₹16 lakh to ₹17 lakh, making compact sedans less prominent in those markets.

On The Electric Front

On the electric vehicle (EV) front, the company remains optimistic about sustainable consumer demand. The shift is being driven by the introduction of high-range cars, faster charging capabilities, expanding infrastructure, and regulatory forces such as Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards.

While immediate fears regarding fuel prices linked to the West Asia crisis have eased, long-term concerns about rising petrol costs continue to push buyers toward EVs.

Following a boost from the goods and services tax (GST), Tata Motors has seen a market share increase over one year.

“We would be ending this one year with nearly 750,000-plus sales, which will be significantly higher than what we would have done in the past,” Chandra said. “Electric vehicles, which always we had a dream of 100,000 cars, we would be more close to 125,000 to 130,000 electric cars sold in the last one year.”
