New Delhi: The Tata Altroz has become the latest car to earn a full 5-star rating under the Bharat NCAP crash tests, a result that will likely reassure many Indian buyers who place safety at the top of their checklist.
This comes just weeks after Tata rolled out the facelifted Altroz hatchback with refreshed looks and added features.

How the Altroz performed at the BNCAP tests
The Bharat NCAP report shows that the Altroz scored 29.65 out of 32 points in the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) category. In the frontal offset test, the car managed 15.55 out of 16, offering good protection to the chest and femur for both driver and passenger. The side impact test wasn’t far behind, with 14.11 out of 16 points.
For Child Occupant Protection (COP), the Altroz achieved 44.90 out of 49 points. Dummy tests of an 18-month-old and a three-year-old child in rear-facing seats using ISOFIX mounts showed high levels of safety. The breakdown was a dynamic score of 23.90/24, vehicle assessment 9/13, and a perfect 12/12 in CRS installation.
Coverage across variants
According to Bharat NCAP, the results apply to all trims in the Altroz lineup, including Smart, Pure, Pure S, Creative, Creative S, Accomplished S, and Accomplished+ S. That means even the entry-level buyer isn’t left out of the safety net, which is not something we could say about cars in India a few years ago.

Safety features list
The Altroz is fitted with six airbags as standard, alongside ABS with EBD, ESC, hill hold assist, tyre pressure monitoring, rear parking sensors, and even a 360-degree camera. For a hatchback, this feels like the kind of kit list you’d only have dreamt of in a ₹10–15 lakh sedan a decade ago.
Engines and pricing
Tata sells the Altroz with three engine choices:
- 1.2-litre Revotron petrol
- 1.2-litre iCNG
- 1.5-litre Revotorq diesel
Prices start at ₹6.89 lakh (ex-showroom) and top out at ₹11.29 lakh (ex-showroom). For reference, that’s roughly USD 8,100 (₹6.89 lakh) to USD 13,300 (₹11.29 lakh), with the dollar currently valued at ₹85.
How Altroz stacks up against other Tata cars
Here’s how the Altroz compares with some of the other popular Tata cars tested by Bharat NCAP:
Model | Adult Occupant Score | Child Occupant Score | Star Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Tata Punch | 31.5 / 32 | 45 / 49 | 5 Star |
Tata Nexon | 29.5 / 32 | 44.5 / 49 | 5 Star |
Tata Altroz | 29.65 / 32 | 44.9 / 49 | 5 Star |
Tata Harrier | 30.08 / 32 | 44.54 / 49 | 5 Star |
With the Altroz joining this lineup, Tata has now positioned itself as one of the few Indian manufacturers consistently delivering top-rated cars across different segments.
Why this rating matters
Crash test scores like this may finally change the way Indians buy hatchbacks. For years, safety talk was drowned out by resale value and mileage. But now, with Bharat NCAP pushing for accountability, we could be seeing a shift where 5-star ratings influence sales charts just as much as fuel efficiency claims. And for families relying on small cars for daily commutes, that shift can mean fewer tragedies on our roads.
