Dhaka: Tarique Rahman is set to be sworn in as Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister on Tuesday after leading his party to a forceful victory in the country’s 13th parliamentary elections. Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won 209 of the 297 seats contested, while the right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami captured 68 seats.
Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League did not participate in the polls, having been barred from contesting.
In a departure from tradition, the oath-taking ceremony will take place at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) Complex rather than at the presidential residence, Bangabhaban.
