In separate news, Chennai Metro commuters now have the option to buy QR-based metro tickets directly through the Uber app, thanks to a new partnership between Uber and Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). Launched on August 7, 2025, this integration uses the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) platform, allowing users to book tickets and access live transit updates within the Uber app itself. Payments for these metro tickets will be processed solely through UPI, ensuring a smooth and secure transaction process.
This collaboration follows Uber’s similar initiative with Delhi Metro, where QR ticketing was introduced to simplify metro travel. To promote the new service in Chennai, Uber is offering a 50 per cent discount on metro tickets purchased via its app throughout August. Additionally, commuters using Uber Auto or Uber Moto rides to or from metro stations will get 50 per cent off on fares, capped at Rs 20 per trip, for the same period.
