Tamil Union virtually clinched a quarter-final place in the Major Clubs T20 tournament with their fourth straight win when they beat Police SC by seven wickets at the R Premadasa Stadium yesterday to consolidate their position at the top of Group A.
Leg-spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth spun out Police SC for 134 taking 4/11. Then Sineth Jayawardena pitched into the Police SC bowling slamming a swift 84 off 52 balls (7 fours, 4 sixes) to take Tamil Union over the line with 24 balls to spare.
Ace Capital CC and Panadura SC kept their chances of reaching the quarter-finals from Group B alive with wins against Badureliya CC and NCC respectively. Panadura SC sneaked through to an exciting two-run against NCC at Colts grounds. Former Sri Lanka opener Oshada Fernando struck six fours and two sixes in his 45-ball knock of 63 for Panadura SC to total 142-9. Seamer Chamika Gunasekara picked up 4/17 for NCC. In reply NCC slumped to 99-6 before Chamika Karunaratne revived them to 139 when he was dismissed for a well-constructed 56 off 45 balls (2 fours, 4 sixes). NCC required three runs off the final delivery but managed only a single with the last batsman getting run out.
Ace Capital CC improved their net run rate tremendously with a 73-run win against Badureliya CC at the P Sara Oval. Skipper Pawantha Weerasinghe hit a half-century off 33 balls (7 fours) for Ace Capital CC to reach a total of 164-6. Badureliya CC were rolled over for 91 by 18-year-old right-arm seamer from Thurstan College Rachintha de Silva who took 4/10.
Nugegoda SWC and Kurunegala YCC figured in a rare tie (DLS method) at the same venue. In a match reduced to 8 overs due to rain, Nugegoda SWC scored 67-5. Kurunegala YCC with a revised target of 76 to chase in 8 overs finished on 75-6. Leg-spinner Sachindu Colombage stood out for Nugegoda SWC with figures of 4/13.
Only one over was possible in the game between Bloomfield and SSC at R Premadasa Stadium due to rain. Bloomfield batting first scored 3-1. (ST)
