Tamil Nadu weather update: State braces for moderate rain as cold conditions intensify

Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Department has forecast moderate rainfall across Tamil Nadu today, even as the overall intensity of showers has begun to subside across the state. While rains have reduced in many parts, including Chennai, the drop in temperatures has led to a noticeable increase in chill, creating a pleasant climate in several regions.

Over the past few days, rainfall has gradually decreased in Tamil Nadu. Although Chennai and other areas experienced significant downpours recently, precipitation has now eased in most places. The reduction in rainfall has been accompanied by an increase in northerly winds, leading to cooler conditions, particularly during mornings and evenings.

Tamil Nadu weather alert

In the last 24 hours, only a few isolated places in Tamil Nadu recorded light rainfall, indicating a broader easing of the wet spell. The Meteorological Department expects this pattern to continue over the next week.

According to a press release, “Due to a change in the speed of easterly winds, light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely at one or two places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal areas today and tomorrow (December 9).”

Looking further ahead, light to moderate rain is expected at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from December 10 to 13.

Chennai weather forecast

For Chennai and its suburbs today (December 8), the sky will be partly cloudy, with light rain likely in a few areas. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 30°C, while the minimum may drop to 24°C.

Fishermen advisory

In weather-related caution, the Meteorological Department noted that a cyclonic storm may form over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, with wind speeds reaching 35–45 kmph, intermittently rising to 55 kmph. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into these areas today.
