Chennai: The Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre has warned of heavy rainfall in the hilly regions of Coimbatore and the Nilgiris today, with more intense downpours expected over the next five days. The shift in westerly wind patterns is set to bring moderate rainfall across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, while isolated areas may experience severe weather conditions.
In addition to the hilly terrains of Coimbatore and the Nilgiris, districts including Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, and Villupuram, along with Puducherry, are likely to witness heavy rainfall tomorrow. Meanwhile, Chennai is expected to remain cloudy with a possibility of moderate showers. The Met Department has also noted that maximum temperatures across the state will be 2 to 3 degrees Celsius higher than usual.
Scorching Heat and Unpredictable Weather Patterns Continue
Despite the forecast of rain, Tamil Nadu continues to experience soaring temperatures. On the previous day, eight locations recorded temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with Madurai Airport registering a scorching 105.8°F—the highest in the state. Other areas, including Madurai city, Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi, Vellore, and Puducherry, recorded 101°F, while Chennai’s Nungambakkam, Cuddalore, and Thanjavur touched 100°F.
Meteorologists predict that the current weather pattern—marked by intense daytime heat followed by evening rains—will persist for the next week. From the 18th onwards, heavy rainfall is expected in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Tenkasi, and Theni districts. The Met Department has also cautioned fishermen, warning of strong surface winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph.
