Chennai: Large parts of Tamil Nadu endured extreme heat conditions on Saturday, with 17 locations across the state recording temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Madurai Airport registered the highest temperature at a sweltering 107°F, followed closely by Madurai city at 105°F. Several other districts, including Karur (Paramathi), Nagapattinam, Trichy, and Vellore, recorded maximum temperatures of 102°F, while Erode (Adhirampattinam), and Chennai’s Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam areas reached 101°F.
The relentless heatwave shows no immediate signs of abating, with the weather office predicting temperatures in some regions to rise 2-4 degrees Celsius above normal in the coming days. However, relief may be in sight for certain areas as the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts between July 15 and 18.
Tamil Nadu weather crisis: Heatwave grips multiple districts
The intense heat has affected both interior and coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, with Tiruttani, Palayankottai, Parangipettai, Thanjavur, Cuddalore, Puducherry, and Karaikal all recording maximum temperatures of 100°F.
Meteorologists attribute the soaring temperatures to prevailing dry westerly winds and clear skies that have intensified solar radiation across the region. The prolonged heatwave has raised health concerns, with medical professionals advising citizens, particularly vulnerable groups like children and the elderly, to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Authorities have recommended staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and being vigilant for symptoms of heat exhaustion.
Chennai weather forecast
In the state capital, Chennai and its suburban areas continued to experience oppressive heat with temperatures hovering around the 100°F mark, compounded by high humidity levels that increased discomfort for residents.
In Chennai, residents may experience temporary respite as the weather office forecasts light to moderate rain in the city, though temperatures are expected to remain near 100°F. Chennai and suburbs can see another day of moderate rains in many places during the evening hours.
Weather transition expected with approaching monsoon
While the plains continue to bake under the scorching sun, the Western Ghats region is preparing for significant weather changes. The IMD predicts heavy rainfall in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore hill areas from July 15 through 18, with isolated locations likely to experience intense downpours. Other parts of Tamil Nadu, including Puducherry and Karaikal, may receive light to moderate showers during this period.
The Chennai Meteorological Centre has indicated that changing wind patterns will influence weather conditions across the state until July 18. Many areas can expect thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, with the hilly districts particularly prone to heavy rainfall.
