Tamil Nadu Weather Alert: IMD predicts week-long thunderstorm activity, coastal areas to face 65 kmph winds

Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for Tamil Nadu, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 65 kmph across coastal districts over the next 48 hours.

The alert comes as the state experiences dramatic weather fluctuations, with scorching daytime temperatures giving way to violent evening thunderstorms in several regions.

Tamil Nadu weather update: Coastal Districts Brace for Severe Weather Conditions

The IMD’s detailed weather bulletin highlights significant risks for southern coastal areas, particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday (July 9-10). The department has specifically warned fishermen against venturing into the sea due to anticipated rough conditions. Weather models indicate the formation of intense thunderstorm activity along the coastline, with the potential for frequent lightning strikes and sudden, powerful wind gusts.

Meteorologists attribute these conditions to an unusual combination of factors – moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea colliding with persistent heat over land areas. This atmospheric instability is expected to continue through the week, bringing intermittent rains till July 14. Interior regions are likely to experience temperature fluctuations, with some areas recording temperatures 2-4°C above normal. Madurai Airport registered the state’s highest temperature at 39.4°C on Tuesday, while other regions including Puducherry and Karaikal maintained near-normal temperatures.

Chennai Weather forecast: Tamil Nadu weatherman predicts Sudden showers, Temperature to Reach 39°C

The state capital finds itself in a delicate weather situation, caught between extreme heat and sudden downpours. Tuesday’s forecast predicts partly cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across various parts of the city. Maximum temperatures are expected to hover between 38-39°C, with night time lows of 29-30°C.

Wednesday’s outlook suggests similar conditions, with isolated light rainfall expected in some areas. Meanwhile, private weather blogger Pradeep Jhon known as Tamil Nadu weatherman predicts sudden showers possible in Chennai today. “Sizzling day in Chennai due to strong offshore winds not allowing the sea breeze to move into the city. Yesterday night at 8 pm the Temp was 35 C shows there was no sea breeze movement into the city. Today the Sea breeze has managed to move into City in northern side and there are lots of popups forming. Sea breeze interaction with these storms can flareup as they bring much needed moisture. Today is most probably the peak hot days coming days the temperature will gradually fall in Chennai from the 39C to 1 to 2C lesser,” he said.
