Tamil Nadu records historic 82.24% voter turnout, highest since 1952; Karur leads with 89%

Chennai: Elections for all 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu were held today in a single phase, with citizens across the state casting their votes with great enthusiasm since early morning. As of 5:00 PM, a historic voter turnout of 82.24 percent was recorded, marking the highest ever since the first Assembly elections in 1952.

The previous highest voter turnout in Tamil Nadu was 78.29 percent recorded during the 2011 Assembly elections. Today’s figure of 82.24 percent surpasses that record by nearly four percentage points. So far, approximately 4.71 crore people have exercised their franchise.

Karur district recorded the highest turnout in the state with 89 percent of votes cast. Chennai district recorded 81.34 percent, while Kanniyakumari recorded the lowest at 73.44 percent.

Among prominent leaders, Edappadi Palaniswami’s constituency in Edappadi recorded 89.09 percent turnout. Vijay’s constituency in Perambur saw 86.72 percent voting, while his other constituency in Trichy East recorded 79.32 percent. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s Kolathur constituency recorded 83.58 percent, and Seeman’s Karaikudi constituency recorded 71.88 percent.

Chennai: Post-6 PM voting arrangements

As the final phase of voting proceeds briskly, tokens are being issued to those who arrive at polling stations before 6:00 PM. Regardless of how late it gets, everyone who has received a token will be permitted to cast their vote.

In all 16 Assembly constituencies in Chennai district, arrangements have been made to ensure that every voter who enters a polling station by 6:00 PM today is allowed to vote, even if it requires waiting in the queue until 8:00 or 9:00 PM or beyond, according to J. Kumaragurubaran, IAS, District Election Officer and Commissioner of the Greater Chennai Corporation.
