Tamil Nadu election voting 2026: Tamil Nadu’s 2026 Assembly elections began with a strong turnout on Thursday, and several prominent film personalities stepped out early to cast their votes. Among those spotted at polling booths were superstar Rajinikanth, actor-politician Kamal Haasan, Ajith Kumar and Vijay, drawing attention as voters across the state participated in the single-phase election.

The high-profile presence of Tamil cinema’s biggest names highlighted the close relationship between film culture and politics in the southern state. Videos circulating online showed celebrities arriving at polling stations, greeting voters and displaying inked fingers after casting their ballots.

Kamal Haasan votes with daughter Shruti

Actor and politician Shruti Haasan accompanied her father Kamal Haasan to the polling booth in Chennai. The pair cast their votes at Alwarpet School and later showed their inked fingers to the media. When asked about his confidence regarding the election outcome, Kamal Haasan responded briefly but firmly, saying, “Yes.”

The veteran Tamil star is contesting the election as the leader of his political party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, and remains one of the key political figures emerging from Tamil cinema.

Rajinikanth, Vijay and Ajith join voters

Superstar Rajinikanth also visited a polling station at Stella Maris School in Chennai, where he cast his vote and acknowledged supporters gathered outside.

Actor Vijay, who launched his political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in February 2024, voted at a polling station in Chennai. His party is contesting the state elections for the first time, adding a new dynamic to the political landscape.

Meanwhile, Ajith Kumar cast his vote at a polling booth in Thiruvanmiyur, while actor Gautham Ram Karthik was also seen voting at Stella Maris College.

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are shaping up as a competitive three-way contest. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has allied with the Indian National Congress, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s entry into the race for the first time has made the contest even more closely watched.
