In 1993, Anand Mohan gave a new turn in Bihar politics. He changed the caste equation by establishing a ‘Bihar People’s Party’ on the basis of opposition reservation.
Bihar Election 2025: One of the most exciting and controversial chapters of Bihar politics is – the year of 1993 when Anand Mohan Singh made a new beginning of his political journey. This was the period when the entire North India was in the midst of political upheaval and the battle of Mandal vs. Kamandal was at its peak.
New equation in Mandal-Center era
In the early 1990s, Indian politics was divided on two major issues. On the one hand, the BJP was challenging the Congress through the Ram temple movement, on the other hand, the recommendations of the Mandal Commission during Vishwanath Pratap Singh’s Prime Minister’s period created a ruckus across the country. In Bihar, veteran Janata Dal leaders Sharad Yadav, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Ram Vilas Paswan stood firmly in support of the Mandal Commission. But Anand Mohan, who came from the Rajput fraternity, was completely different.
Anand Mohan was against reservation
The story begins in 1991 when Chandrasekhar’s government was at the center. After partition in the Janata Dal, Chandrashekhar formed a separate Samajwadi Janata Party. Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav gave L.K. Advani’s Rath Yatra was stopped and arrested, causing a political atmosphere to become more tense. Anand Mohan, who was elected on the Janata Dal ticket from the Mahishi assembly seat, decided to separate from the party in this background. He joined the faction of 27% OBC reservation leaders and came in support of Chandrashekhar.
‘Bihar People’s Party’ born in 1993
In 1993, Anand Mohan formally founded the ‘Bihar People’s Party’. This step was not only a significant turn of his political career, but also the beginning of a new polarization in the caste politics of Bihar. At that time, Anand Mohan’s image was not just that of a politician. He also ran a notorious underground network that targeted OBC reservation supporters. They emerged as young faces of the anti -reservation movement between the Rajput and the Brahmin community. Anand Mohan took a bold step in the 1991 Lok Sabha elections. He announced to contest elections from Madhepura, considered a stronghold of Yadavas. He contested as an independent candidate challenging the famous saying of Bihar “Rome Pope and Madhepura Gop”.
Beginning of political enmity
Meanwhile, Bahubali leader Pappu Yadav of Kosi-Simanchal was also active on the political stage. This enmity started between pro -reservation pro -reservation and anti -reservation Anand Mohan was going to influence the politics of Bihar deeply in the coming years.
Political legacy
In 1993, the establishment of Anand Mohan’s Bihar People’s Party proved to be an important milestone in Bihar politics. This was not only the beginning of the new equation of caste politics, but it also proved how the issue of reservation can distract political alliances and give rise to new political powers. Today, even after three decades, the roots of the caste equation and reservation issue in Bihar politics can be searched in the same period when Anand Mohan made a bold decision to choose his separate political path.
