Actress Tabu has spoken about the crucial role a director plays in shaping her performance, saying she considers herself a “director’s actor” and relies heavily on the filmmaker to bring out the best in her.
In a throwback media interaction, Tabu said her first priority is that the film has a good and sensible director, while the quality of her character comes next. According to the actress, even a strong role can fail to reach its full potential if the director is unable to extract the best performance from an actor.
“I think my performance and more than performance, I think whether the film is good or bad depends on the director. So, it is very important for me that the director is good,” Tabu had said.
“Firstly, I want the film’s director to be good and sensible, and then my role, obviously. Because I have to have a good director. Even if it’s a good role, the director has to get out the best from me. I depend on the director. I am a director’s artist,” she added.
Tabu made her screen debut as a teenager in 1985 with Dev Anand’s Hum Naujawan. She went on to play her first lead role in the 1991 Telugu film Coolie No. 1 and achieved her first major success in Bollywood with the 1994 drama Vijaypath.
The actress is now set to reprise her popular role as former Inspector General Meera Deshmukh in Drishyam 3: The Conclusion. The Abhishek Pathak directorial, led by Ajay Devgn, also stars Prakash Raj, Jaideep Ahlawat, Ishita Dutt, Shriya Saran and Rajat Kapoor in key roles.
Written and directed by Abhishek Pathak, the film is backed by Alok Jain, Ajit Andhare, Kumar Mangat Pathak and Pathak. Presented by Star Studio18 and produced by Panorama Studios, Drishyam 3 is expected to release in cinemas on October 2, 2026.
