Taapsee Pannu has spoken candidly about the kind of opportunities that have shaped her career, saying she may not have had the same journey if filmmakers had not taken chances on women-led stories. In an interview with IANS, the actor said the growth of female-driven cinema has created space for performers who are not typically offered conventional Bollywood heroine roles. She also stressed that the progress has been uneven, but continuing to make and support such films is important for the industry’s future.
Taapsee Says Challenging Roles Defined Her Career
Taapsee said women-centric films have played an important role in keeping actors such as her active in the industry. She credited both filmmakers willing to back these projects and audiences prepared to watch them for helping create opportunities outside traditional commercial roles.
“I wouldn’t have had a career like mine if such films hadn’t been made,” she said. According to Taapsee, the number of female-led projects has increased over the years, although their success and frequency have varied from one period to another.
She said she and other actors continue to pursue such stories because stepping away from the effort to expand opportunities for women could slow the progress that has already been made.
Actor Says She Was Not Offered Conventional Heroine Roles
Taapsee also addressed the perception that actresses who appear in women-led films deliberately reject mainstream heroine roles. She said that, in her case, the reality has often been that she was not presented with those conventional opportunities in the first place.
“There are many actresses like me, I feel, who don’t get the role of conventional heroines,” she said, adding that she has instead received scripts involving more challenging characters and has chosen projects based on the roles that appealed to her.
Her comments reflect a career largely built around characters that move beyond the familiar romantic or supporting roles traditionally associated with female leads in Hindi cinema.
Success of One Film Can Influence Future Projects
Taapsee also highlighted how closely the fortunes of women-led films can affect the wider perception of the genre. She said the success of one such project is often welcomed by actors and filmmakers across the industry because it can reassure investors that audiences are willing to support stories led by women.
At the same time, she noted that a failure can create concern about other projects in development. According to the actor, there is a feeling among those working in this space that every individual release carries significance because its performance can influence the willingness of producers and investors to finance similar films.
A Filmography Built Around Unconventional Characters
Over the years, Taapsee has appeared in films including Pink, Naam Shabana, Mulk, Thappad, Rashmi Rocket, Haseen Dillruba and Dobaaraa. Many of these projects placed her characters at the centre of stories dealing with personal choices, social expectations, discrimination, relationships and resilience.
In Pink, she played a young woman confronting social attitudes and questions surrounding consent. Thappad focused on a woman reassessing her marriage after an act of domestic violence, while Rashmi Rocket followed an athlete facing barriers within the sporting system.
Taapsee Prepares for Action Drama Gandhari
Her next release, Gandhari, will continue her association with emotionally demanding roles while adding a substantial action element. The film follows a mother searching for her abducted child, placing her character in a situation that combines physical confrontation with personal desperation.
Taapsee is expected to portray the emotional strain of a parent determined to bring her child home while navigating the dangers surrounding the search. Gandhari is scheduled to release on September 3.
