T20 World Cup: Mitchell Marsh ruled out of Australia’s opening match vs Ireland due to groin injury

New Delhi: Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh has missed the team’s opening T20 World Cup game against Ireland on Wednesday due to an injury. Marsh sustained a direct blow to the groin during training earlier this week which prevented him from participation.

Cricket Australia, in a release on February 11, confirmed the development just few hours ahead of their first match of the marquee event. Lethal batter Travis Head has walked in as the skipper for the Aussies in the clash.

‘Marsh is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort which is restricting his movement. Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding, and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice,’ the release added.

Will Marsh return for the next clash?

Regarding his recovery and re-joining the team, nothing concreate has been divulged by Cricket Australia as of now. A timeline on the skipper’s return is still awaited. Meanwhile, the Australian selectors have called up Steve Smith, who was named in the standby, to travel to Sri Lanka as cover to acclimatize and prepare, should his services be required.
