Sydney Attack Latest Updates: Two attackers were behind the mass shooting that took place on Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday 14 December. One of the attackers, Sajid Akram, was originally from Hyderabad and still holds an Indian passport. However, he left Hyderabad and shifted to Australia 27 years ago i.e. in 1998.
On the connection of Sajid Akram with Indian passport, Telangana Police says that 50 year old Sajid Akram was killed by police bullets during the attack. At the same time, his 24-year-old son Navid Akram has been caught alive and is currently undergoing treatment. Australian investigators have described the attack as a terrorist incident inspired by the so-called Islamic State group (ISIS). Let us tell you that in this terrorist attack, 15 people including a 10 year old girl and an 87 year old man lost their lives. Terrorist Sajid Akram is also among those killed.
Who is Sajid Akram?
According to Telangana Director General of Police (DGP), 50-year-old Sajid Akram was a resident of Hyderabad and had gone to Australia on a student visa in November 1998. Police said he had completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree in Hyderabad before leaving India in search of employment. Akram lived in Australia for 27 years and during this time he had very little contact with his family in Hyderabad.
Sajid Akram marries Venera Grosso
After moving to Australia, Akram married Venera Grosso, whom the police described as a woman of European origin. This couple has two children Naved and a daughter. Akram last came to Hyderabad in 2022. She held an Indian passport, while her children who were born in Australia hold Australian citizenship.
Akram did not even come to his father’s funeral
Investigators said Akram’s relationship with his family in Hyderabad had deteriorated several years ago due to family feuds. It is believed that relatives had severed ties with him long before the attack. When his father died in 2017, Akram did not even attend his funeral.
Suspicion of father and son taking military training in Philippines
Australian police are also investigating the two suspects’ travel to the Philippines. According to the Philippines Bureau of Immigration, Sajid Akram and his son stayed in the Philippines between November 1 and 28. During this period, Sajid Akram used the Indian passport, while Navid Akram used the Australian passport. Both of them told Davao as their last destination and went back to Sydney. Let us tell you that Davao is a big city on Mindanao Island, where Islamic groups have been active in poor areas. However, the Philippines Army says that it cannot be clearly said that the father and son received military training here.
