Suryakumar Yadav has made it clear that he has not given up on returning to the Indian team after losing his place in the T20I squad.
Speaking at an event for the Pro Govinda League on Thursday, the former India captain was asked about his plans for a comeback and offered a measured response, insisting that his focus remains on putting in the work and waiting for another opportunity.
“Look, I’m putting in all the hard work and doing everything I can. If things go well, then everything will fall into place,” Suryakumar said.
The statement comes only a few months after the 35-year-old led India to their third T20 World Cup title and a second successive triumph in the tournament. Despite that success as captain, Suryakumar was subsequently removed from the T20I leadership role, with Shreyas Iyer taking over, and was left out of the squads for India’s tours of Ireland and England.
His batting form has been a significant factor in the selectors’ decision. Suryakumar endured a difficult IPL 2026 campaign with Mumbai Indians, scoring 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76, with only two half-centuries. His returns during the T20 World Cup were also inconsistent, despite India eventually lifting the trophy under his leadership.
The selectors have, however, not completely closed the door on the Mumbai batter. A BCCI source previously indicated that Suryakumar could return if he produces consistent performances in domestic cricket.
“Doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open. He is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains eligible to come back if he scores runs in domestic cricket consistently,” the source was quoted as saying.
Suryakumar’s latest comments suggest he understands that equation. Rather than making any prediction about his return, he has chosen to concentrate on preparation and performance, leaving the selection decision outside his control.
Surya is also poised to leave Mumbai Indians after yet another underwhelming IPL campaign. The veteran player has been linked with a move to Kolkata Knight Riders, who themselves need a captain after Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement.
