Rakul Preet Singh has triggered a social media debate after calling her Ramayana character, Surpanakha, misunderstood and layered. Rakul has been grabbing eyeballs ever since her first look became noticeable in the Nitesh Tiwari-directed grand saga’s trailer. Now, her latest remarks on the controversial woman from the Hindu epic have been met with criticism from some fans, with many questioning the re-imagining of mythological figures ahead of the film’s release. The controversy has also revived discussions on Sai Pallavi’s earlier comments on Ravana, bringing its portrayal of main characters into the public chatter.
Rakul Preet’s comment about Surpanakha
Talking about her experience of working on Ramayana, Rakul spoke about the international ambitions of the film and the complexity of her character. The project is an opportunity to showcase India’s cultural heritage and history to the world, she added.
Talking about what attracted her to Surpanakha, Rakul told PTI, “I think what was so exciting were a couple of things. First, it’s India’s representation to the world. Our history, our truth represented to the world’s first ever-global film. Secondly, Surpanakha is a very misunderstood and layered character. She was the reason why the war took place in the first place. So it has been really interesting to play someone with multiple shades.”
Rakul’s comments imply that she viewed Surpanakha as a character with different dimensions instead of seeing her purely through the conventional lens of an antagonist. However, her representation has elicited a variety of reactions from those who know the epic.
Why are Rakul’s remarks receiving flak?
After the interview, many social media users wondered why actors associated with were discussing the motivations and personalities of the antagonists before the film was released. Some wondered if the comments were a promotional strategy to build curiosity around the ambitious adaptation.
Others argued that a mythological character being complex or misunderstood doesn’t automatically make them morally good. Other viewers were worried that attempts to reframe the antagonists might be seen as downplaying their misdeeds or changing the traditional understanding of the epic.
Some social media users linked the debate to the religious significance of Ramayana, saying that the characters of the epic need to be portrayed with sensitivity. Others questioned if the film’s marketing was intentionally starting debates on controversial interpretations.
Some posts also speculated whether the actors’ comments were scripted or meant to influence public opinion. That said, these are social media accusations with no proof offered to support suggestions that the comments were scripted or paid promotional messages.
Sai Pallavi’s take on Ravana
Rakul’s comments have also reignited the discussion about Sai Pallavi’s alleged description of Ravana as “not at bad”. During a red carpet interaction recently, Sai said, “Because Ravana is not all bad. And it’s important that we spot the Ravana in us, and we make changes over time.” The two statements have ignited a debate over whether the new film will go into the motives and perspectives of characters who are typically depicted as the bad guys.
The comparison has led to online questions about why the movie’s cast seem to be highlighting the complex nature of characters like Ravana and Surpanakha. Some viewers have welcomed the opportunity to see the characters in a different light, while others fear that such talk might be misinterpreted as an attempt to justify their behaviour.
Who is Surpanakha in Ramayana?
Surpanakha, sister of Ravana, is an important character in the traditional Ramayana story, precipitating the clash between Rama and Ravana. During Rama, Sita and Lakshman’s exile in the forest, Surpanakha meets the two brothers and shows an interest in Rama. In a famous episode of the epic, the meeting turns hostile and Lakshmana cuts off her nose.
Surpanakha then went to Ravana and this resulted in the abduction of Sita and the subsequent war between Rama and Ravana. Her role, however, is closely linked to the origins of the conflict.
Ramayana is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and will star Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, while Rakul will be seen as Surpanakha. The project is a two-part cinematic franchise developed with an international audience in mind, based on the ancient Sanskrit epic traditionally attributed to Valmiki.
