Supreme Court tells Calcutta High Court to appoint judicial officers for Bengal SIR process

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Calcutta High Court to appoint serving as well as former judicial officers to assist in West Bengal’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The order comes amid a growing tussle between the State government and the Election Commission of India over the voter roll clean-up exercise.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant along with Justices Joymala Bagchi and N.V. Anjaria, noted that the process had stalled at the stage of claims and objections. The court observed that there appeared to be a trust deficit between two constitutional authorities – the State government and the Election Commission, which had led to a blame game.
