What order did the Supreme Court give regarding Class 8 Social Science book?
The Supreme Court of India has banned the NCERT Class 8 Social Science book in which ‘corruption in the judiciary’ was mentioned under the chapter ‘The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society’. The court has said that this book will neither be printed, nor sold, nor will it be shared in digital form. Besides, the court has also issued notice to School Education Department and NCERT Director Dr. Dinesh Prasad Saklani under Contempt of Courts Act.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, reacting to this entire matter, said that the government fully respects the judiciary and whatever instructions have been given, they will be fully followed. He also said that as soon as he got information about this controversy, he immediately gave instructions to withdraw the book so that it does not go into further circulation. The minister also assured that the matter will be investigated and action will be taken against whoever is responsible. He said that such mistake will not be repeated in future.
NCERT Class 8 Social Science Book What is Controversy?
A chapter on the role of the judiciary was added to the new Class 8 Social Science book of NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training). In this chapter it was written that ‘corruption exists at different levels of the judiciary.’ Controversy started regarding this line. Chief Justice of the country Surya Kant expressed strong displeasure over this and said that no one can play with the credibility of the judiciary. After this, on February 25, the Supreme Court registered this case as suo motu.
How many copies of NCERT Class 8 Social Science Book have been printed so far and how many were sold?
According to the information, about 2.25 lakh copies of this controversial book were printed. But it is a matter of relief that only 38 of these copies were sold in the market. All remaining copies have been recalled. NCERT is now trying to track those 38 sold copies also, so that they are no longer in circulation.
