Superman star David Corenswet revealed he tried to come up with reasons not to take on the iconic role of Clark Kent. Director and writer James Gunn’s reboot of the fan-favourite superhero franchise hits the UK cinemas on Friday, July 11 as David joins a new era from the DC Comics Universe.
Rising star David is donning the famous red cape for the eagerly awaited fantasy movie, which follows Superman’s journey to reconcile his alien Krypton heritage with his adoptive human family on Earth. In a new interview, David revealed there was a moment he was hesitant about taking the role.

“A role like Superman seems like something that everybody would want, and that’s not true. There are some people who wouldn’t want that role and who would, if given the opportunity, say no. I am obviously not one of those people,” he told GQ Hype.
“But I certainly tried to think of reasons not to. Ultimately, what I landed on for myself was, if this is the only role I get to play for the rest of my life, and that means whether I get to play it once or get to play it 10 times, would I still say yes? And the answer was yes.”
During the same interview, director James Gunn discussed the box office pressure on the movie and said the movie “isn’t the riskiest endeavour in the world”.
It was reported online that the movie would need to earn $700 million minimum to be successful, but James called the reports “just complete and utter nonsense”.
At the London premiere of Superman, David told Heart that he sought advice from Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin, who played Superman in Man of Steel and Superman & Lois respectively.
The duo ‘encouraged’ the actor but didn’t want to influence his performance. “Both of them, interestingly, sort of said in their own words, ‘I’m not gonna try and give you any tips’.
“And I think that’s a very Superman thing. Superman’s not so much for giving advice or dictating how other people should be.”
He continued: “They really just conveyed to me an encouragement and a sense of ‘have fun with it’, which I think is Superman’s way of doing it too.
