New Delhi: The inheritance dispute over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s multi-crore estate has reached the Delhi High Court. On Thursday (September 25), explosive claims were made during the hearing. Sunjay’s children have contested his will.
Karisma Kapoor, the late businessman’s second wife, shares two children with him: Samaira and Kiaan Raj Kapur. Both have challenged his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, regarding the estate. The property is estimated at nearly Rs 30,000 crore.
1. Court questions sealed cover request
Justice Jyoti Singh raised serious concerns over Priya Sachdev’s plea to submit a list of Sunjay Kapur’s assets in a sealed envelope. Priya had sought either a sealed submission or the creation of a “Confidentiality Club” to restrict access. However, the judge noted the potential issues this could create.
“Allowing the application may be problematic for the simple reason that as the alleged beneficiary of the estate, they (Karisma’s children Samaira Kapur and Kiaan Raj Kapur) have a right to question the assets disclosed. So, tomorrow if they have to verify and go about asking what has happened, if they are bound by this confidentiality club, how will they ever defend their case?” Justice Singh asked.
2. Priya highlights cybersecurity and privacy concerns
Priya’s legal team argued that confidentiality was essential to protect sensitive information. “There are bank details, other financial details. Why should the public have someone’s bank account number?” her counsel said. The lawyer added that the matter had already drawn wide attention and pointed to “press conferences” being held after previous hearings.
3. Children challenge their late father’s will
The case stems from Samaira and Kiaan’s challenge to their father’s will, which they allege is questionable. They argue that, as his children, they are entitled to a rightful share in the massive estate. On September 10, the Delhi High Court had directed Priya to submit a full list of Sunjay’s assets and liabilities. Thursday’s proceedings focused on how that information should be presented, openly in court, in a sealed cover, or under restricted access.
The matter has not yet been resolved, and the hearing will continue on Friday (September 26). The court is expected to weigh Priya’s request for confidentiality against the children’s right to transparency as the high-profile inheritance battle unfolds.
